Eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anesthetic, supplemented with sedation medication, in the outpatient surgery suite. Dr. Clymer places the upper blepharoplasty incision in the natural crease already present in the upper eyelid skin. Excess fat and skin are removed. The incisions are closed with fine sutures that are removed three days after the procedure. The incision heals in a line that mimics the natural upper eyelid skin crease. The lower eyelid tuck is most often performed with an incision behind the eyelashes where it is not visible.

Most patients are back to their normal routines within days, although complete recovery may take a few weeks. Swelling and bruising are part of the recovery process, and are limited by using cold compresses the first 48 hours after surgery. Eyelid lifts are often combined with forehead lifts and/or facelifts. Dr. Clymer discusses each patient's concerns and their options at the time of their consultation.
